A tragic incident from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, has come under police investigation after 28-year-old maulana Abdul Qadir died from severe burn injuries sustained in an alleged self-immolation attempt. The case has drawn public attention as investigators examine allegations made by the deceased before his death and the complaint filed by his family.
Abdul Qadir, a maulana at Husaini Masjid and a resident of the Ansari locality under Fatehganj Paschimi police station, had been married to Saima, 24, for four years. The couple had two young children—a three-year-old daughter and a one-and-a-half-year-old son.
According to the complaint filed by Abdul Qadir's brother and the dying declaration recorded by police while he was receiving treatment, Abdul Qadir alleged that he had been facing repeated marital disputes and severe mental distress. He claimed that his wife, Saima, along with her brother, subjected him to physical and mental harassment, pressured him to transfer ownership of his house into her name, and allegedly assaulted him after he refused.
In his statement, Abdul Qadir further alleged that he was threatened with false criminal cases and repeatedly accused of maintaining an extramarital relationship. He also informed investigators that a dowry harassment and domestic violence case had been filed against him nearly two years earlier, though the matter was later settled mutually. These allegations remain under investigation and have not been proven in court.
Police are also examining CCTV footage that reportedly shows Abdul Qadir entering his house on July 28 carrying two bottles believed to contain petrol. About 16 minutes later, he is seen running out of the house engulfed in flames while his wife follows him, calling for help. Local residents rushed to the scene, extinguished the flames with water, and shifted him to a hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Abdul Qadir succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday evening.
Following his death, his brother lodged a complaint accusing Saima of abetting the suicide. Police have launched a detailed investigation and are examining the dying declaration, CCTV footage, witness statements, medical records, and other evidence to determine the facts of the case.
Officials have stated that the investigation is ongoing and that any further legal action will be based on the evidence collected during the inquiry. Authorities have appealed to the public to avoid speculation until the investigation is completed.
