A controversy has erupted at Ajmer Central Jail after allegations that three inmates were allowed to speak over a video call with Nafees Chishti, an accused/convict in the long-running 1992 Ajmer blackmail and sexual-abuse case.
According to the allegations, the video call was arranged from the jailer's office using a phone belonging to jailer Saddam Hussain. The inmates allegedly spoke to Nafees Chishti during the call, raising serious questions about security procedures and the privileges being given to prisoners.
The 1992 Ajmer case involved the sexual abuse and blackmail of numerous school and college-going girls and became one of Rajasthan's most notorious criminal cases. In 2024, six accused, including Nafees Chishti, were convicted in the case.
Three inmates allegedly spoke to Nafees
The three prisoners named in the allegations are Tariq Chishti, his son Tausif alias Chinki, and Fakhar Jamali.
They are reportedly serving seven-year sentences in connection with a 2014 attempt-to-murder case. During the alleged video call, they reportedly spoke directly with Nafees Chishti.
One of the statements attributed to Nafees during the conversation was:
“Baaki sab kara denge, befikar raho, InshaAllah.”
At the end of the conversation, Nafees reportedly thanked the jailer and addressed him as “Ok chacha.”
The alleged conversation has raised questions about how a prisoner was able to communicate with inmates inside a central jail and whether proper authorization and security protocols were followed.
Jailer suspended, inquiry ordered
Following the controversy, DG Prisons Ashok Rathore reportedly suspended jailer Saddam Hussain, while a departmental inquiry was ordered into the circumstances surrounding the alleged call.
Tausif alias Chinki was also reportedly transferred from Ajmer Central Jail to Bharatpur Jail.
An FIR has reportedly been registered at Civil Lines Police Station in Ajmer, with investigators expected to examine the phone, call records, CCTV footage and the circumstances in which the alleged video call was arranged.
Questions over jail security
The incident has sparked questions about prison security and whether inmates were given unauthorized access to people outside the jail.
If the allegations are established during the inquiry, authorities will have to determine who authorized the communication, how the phone was brought into the jailer's office and whether any prison rules were violated.
The case is particularly sensitive because of the history of the Ajmer blackmail scandal. The Indian Express has described the 1992 case as involving the systematic blackmail and sexual abuse of around 100 school and college girls in Ajmer.
