Assam STF Arrests Four Men in Probe Into Alleged Links With Pakistan-Based Network

Assam Police's Special Task Force (STF), working with Hailakandi district police, has arrested another young man in connection with an investigation into alleged links with a Pakistan-based network.

The latest arrest was made in the Ramnathpur area of Hailakandi district, where police detained 21-year-old Fazal Islam Barbhuiyan.

The arrest follows an earlier STF operation on July 25, when three other men were taken into custody.

Four Arrests in the Investigation

The three men arrested during the July operation were identified as:

  • Akramul Islam, 26, from Dhubri
  • Aminur Rahman, 22, from Chirang
  • Abdul Hussain, 54, from Barpeta

With Barbhuiyan's arrest, four people have now been detained as part of the investigation.

Police are examining whether the suspects had any operational or communication links with the Shahzad Bhatti network, which is reportedly based in Pakistan.

Digital and Other Material Seized

During the operations, investigators reportedly seized several items from the suspects, including mobile phones, Aadhaar cards and bank passbooks.

Police also reportedly recovered what authorities described as altered or tampered religious literature. Investigators are examining the material to determine its purpose and whether it has any connection with the wider allegations.

The contents of the seized electronic devices and financial records could be particularly important in establishing whether the suspects maintained contact with individuals outside India.

Investigation Into Possible Network

The arrests form part of a wider investigation into alleged activities connected to a Pakistan-based network. Authorities will need to establish the nature of any links, the role played by each suspect and whether additional people were involved.

At this stage, allegations of links to a foreign-based organisation should not be treated as proof of criminal activity. The evidence recovered during the investigation will have to be examined by the authorities and tested through the legal process.

Assam Police Continue Probe

The Assam STF and district police are expected to continue questioning the arrested individuals and analysing the material seized during the operations.

Investigators may also examine communication records, financial transactions and contacts to determine whether the four suspects were acting independently or as part of a larger network.

The case has drawn attention because of the possibility of cross-border links, but the investigation will ultimately determine the facts.

Security Concerns and Political Debate

The arrests have also triggered discussion about internal security and the need for effective intelligence and policing across Assam and other parts of India.

Political supporters may point to leaders such as Yogi Adityanath, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Suvendu Adhikari when discussing stronger law-and-order policies. However, security matters are ultimately the responsibility of law-enforcement and government institutions, and any action should be based on evidence and the law.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further arrests or details may follow if authorities uncover additional evidence.
