A disturbing incident has been reported from Rangpur, Bangladesh, where police recovered the bodies of a retired school teacher, his wife and their two children from a house that had reportedly been locked from the outside.
The victims have been identified as Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, their daughter Kandi Chakraborty, 25, and their 12-year-old son Priyam Chakraborty.
Foul Smell Leads Locals to the House
According to police and local reports, the family home had remained locked for some time. Concern grew after residents noticed a strong foul smell coming from inside the property.
Police eventually arrived, broke open the main gate and entered the house. The decomposed bodies of the four family members were then recovered from different parts of the building.
Ganapati's body was reportedly found on the roof, while the bodies of his wife and daughter were discovered on the staircase leading toward the third floor. Their young son was found under a bed.
Police Investigating Cause of Death
Rangpur Kotwali police said the circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear. Investigators are considering different possibilities, including the possibility of a planned killing or a family-related tragedy.
A CID forensic team has reportedly visited the scene and begun collecting evidence. The bodies have been sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinations, which are expected to help establish the cause and approximate time of death.
Authorities are also examining the condition of the house, the locked entrance and other evidence that could help reconstruct what happened.
Questions About the Security of Bangladesh's Hindu Minority
The deaths have also drawn attention to wider concerns about the safety of Bangladesh's Hindu minority.
Following the political upheaval in Bangladesh in August 2024, there were reports of attacks and intimidation affecting members of minority communities, including Hindus. Human-rights organisations and news outlets have documented incidents of violence and property attacks, while the scale, motives and perpetrators have varied from case to case.
However, there is currently no confirmed information establishing that the Rangpur deaths were religiously motivated or that any particular organisation was responsible. Investigators will need to establish the facts before such a connection can be made.

Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud said the incident was being treated seriously and that authorities were collecting information and evidence.
For the family and the local community, the most urgent questions remain unanswered: how the four people died, who last saw them alive and why the house was locked from the outside.
The post-mortem findings and the ongoing police and CID investigation are expected to provide important answers.
