A stray section of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has unexpectedly turned into a valuable scientific experiment after crashing into the Moon. Although the impact was unplanned, researchers believe it offers a rare opportunity to study the Moon's surface, understand its geological history, and improve future lunar exploration missions.
The collision occurred near the Moon's Einstein Crater, with the empty upper stage of the Falcon 9 rocket striking the lunar surface at an estimated speed of 8,700 km/h (5,400 mph). While the impact itself lasted only a fraction of a second, scientists expect the data collected from the event to provide important insights into the Moon's composition and the effects of high-speed impacts.
How the Rocket Ended Up on a Collision Course
The Falcon 9 rocket launched in January 2025, carrying Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lunar lander into space. After successfully placing the payload on its journey toward the Moon, the rocket's upper stage had completed its mission.
Unlike the reusable first stage, which safely returned to Earth, the upper stage remained in space. Measuring roughly the height of a five-storey building and weighing around 4,000 kilograms, the empty booster entered a long, looping orbit around Earth.
Over the following months, the combined gravitational pull of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, along with tiny forces created by sunlight, gradually altered its trajectory. These subtle changes eventually pushed the rocket onto an unavoidable path toward the Moon.
Why Scientists Are Excited
Although accidental, the impact provides scientists with a rare chance to observe how a large human-made object interacts with the lunar surface.
Researchers hope to learn more about:
- The composition of material hidden beneath the Moon's surface.
- The size and shape of the newly formed impact crater.
- How lunar dust behaves after a high-speed collision.
- The structure and strength of the Moon's outer crust.
- The history of lunar impacts over billions of years.
When the rocket struck the surface, it likely created a cloud of dust stretching for nearly 100 kilometres, exposing material that has remained buried for millions or even billions of years. Studying this material may reveal valuable clues about the Moon's formation and the early history of the Earth-Moon system, believed to have formed around 4.5 billion years ago.
Why the Impact Was Difficult to Observe
Despite the dramatic nature of the collision, almost no one witnessed it directly.
The impact occurred on the daylight side of the Moon, making the brief flash almost impossible to detect with amateur telescopes. Even professional observatories expected the flash to last less than a second.
Several major observatories across the Americas recorded observations, while South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter passed near the crash site shortly beforehand. Scientists are currently analysing any available images before releasing their findings.
Meanwhile, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is expected to photograph the area. By comparing images taken before and after the collision, researchers should be able to identify the exact crater created by the impact.
Not the First Human Object to Hit the Moon
Although this event has attracted global attention, it is far from the first time a human-made object has struck the Moon.
Since 1959, dozens of spacecraft and rocket stages have intentionally or accidentally crashed into the lunar surface.
Some notable examples include:
- Luna 2, the Soviet spacecraft that became the first human-made object to reach the Moon in 1959.
- NASA's Ranger missions during the 1960s, which intentionally impacted the Moon to capture close-up images before destruction.
- Several Apollo-era rocket stages deliberately crashed to help scientists study moonquakes.
- NASA's LCROSS mission in 2009, which intentionally impacted the Moon in search of water ice.
More recently, researchers identified another accidental impact in 2022, believed to have been caused by the leftover booster of a Chinese lunar mission launched in 2014.
A Valuable Opportunity for Future Lunar Missions
Scientists say every impact on the Moon acts as a natural experiment. Unlike Earth, the Moon has no atmosphere or weather to erase impact scars, allowing researchers to study craters in exceptional detail.
The data gathered from this unexpected Falcon 9 impact could improve our understanding of lunar geology, help engineers design safer spacecraft, and support upcoming missions under NASA's Artemis program and other international lunar exploration efforts.
As high-resolution images and scientific analyses become available in the coming weeks, researchers expect this accidental crash to provide valuable information that could shape the next generation of Moon missions.
