Alipurduar, West Bengal: A woman from Shiltong Forest village in Alipurduar district has reportedly approached the Superintendent of Police with a written complaint alleging that she and her husband were assaulted after she refused to convert to Christianity.
According to the complaint as described in reports circulating online, the woman said that she was approached by people who allegedly tried to persuade her to adopt Christianity. She claimed that she made it clear that she wanted to continue following her Hindu faith and did not wish to convert.
The woman has alleged that the disagreement was followed by a physical assault. She further claimed that her husband was also beaten during the incident.
Woman Seeks Police Intervention
The complainant reportedly told authorities that she wanted to remain Hindu and had refused the alleged pressure to change her religion.
After claiming that local police had not taken satisfactory action, she reportedly submitted a written complaint directly to the Alipurduar SP, seeking an investigation and protection for her family.
The police will now have to examine the complaint, record statements from those involved and determine whether the allegations are supported by evidence. Any available medical records, witness accounts, videos or other material could also form part of the investigation.
Allegations Need to Be Verified
The incident has attracted attention on social media, where some posts have described the accused as “Christian missionaries” or “goons.” Those descriptions should not be treated as established facts unless supported by police findings or other reliable evidence.
The central questions are whether the alleged assault took place, who was involved and whether the incident was connected to an attempt to pressure the woman into changing her religion.
Religious conversion by force, coercion or unlawful intimidation would raise serious legal concerns, but those elements must be established through a proper investigation rather than social-media claims.
What Happens Next?
The woman's complaint to the SP is now expected to bring the allegations under closer police scrutiny. Authorities will need to establish the sequence of events and determine whether any criminal offences were committed.
If the investigation confirms that the woman and her husband were assaulted or threatened, appropriate action should follow under the law. If the allegations cannot be substantiated, that too should be established through a fair and transparent process.
The case highlights the importance of protecting every person's freedom of religion, personal safety and right to seek help from law-enforcement authorities without intimidation.
