Kerala Influencer Athulya Ashokan’s Alarming Instagram Post Sparks Concern Over Her Marriage

Kerala: A social media controversy involving Kerala influencer Athulya Ashokan resurfaced after an Instagram Story in November 2023 appeared to raise concerns about her safety following her marriage to Risal Mansoor.

Athulya had announced her marriage to Mansoor earlier in 2023. Reports at the time said she had converted to Islam and began using the name Alia after the marriage. Her wedding also attracted considerable attention because it took place amid the public debate surrounding the film The Kerala Story.

Alarming Message on Instagram

In November 2023, Athulya shared an Instagram Story that was later deleted. In the post, she tagged her husband and wrote that, should anything happen to her, he would be responsible.

The message quickly spread after followers took screenshots and circulated them across social media. Several people called for authorities to check on her welfare, while online discussions began connecting the situation to the debate over The Kerala Story.

Some social-media posts went much further, claiming that Athulya had alleged physical abuse, confinement and threats to her life. However, the detailed versions of those claims are not clearly established by the mainstream reports that documented the original controversy. What was clearly reported was the alarming message in which she named her husband in connection with anything that might happen to her.

Athulya Later Said She Was Safe

The story took another turn just two days later.

Athulya posted a longer clarification saying that she and Mansoor had been separated for about a month and that she had been emotionally distressed. She also stated that her relationship had nothing to do with The Kerala Story and specifically asked people not to turn her personal situation into a communal issue.

Most importantly, she said that she was “completely safe.”

That later statement is important because some social-media posts continued to present the earlier Instagram message as proof of an ongoing threat, even though Athulya herself subsequently said she was safe.

How the Controversy Started

Athulya's marriage had already become a topic of discussion months earlier. Reports said that before the marriage she had frequently appeared on social media in traditional Indian clothing, while after marrying Mansoor she was seen wearing Islamic clothing.

Because the marriage coincided with the release of The Kerala Story, some social-media users began presenting her relationship as an example of the film's narrative. Other reports noted that she herself had rejected that interpretation.

The term “love jihad” was also repeatedly used by social-media commentators in discussions about her marriage. That is a contested political and social characterization, rather than a finding established by the reporting about Athulya's personal relationship.

A Story That Was Quickly Turned Into a Larger Debate

The Athulya Ashokan episode shows how quickly a personal dispute can become part of a much wider online argument about religion, marriage and the film The Kerala Story.

The original Instagram message understandably caused concern, but her subsequent clarification that she was safe and did not want the matter turned into a communal conflict is equally important.

Any allegations of abuse or threats should be investigated on the basis of evidence and, where appropriate, through the legal system. At the same time, unverified social-media claims should not be presented as established facts.

For now, the publicly reported sequence is clear: Athulya's worrying Instagram message triggered concern in November 2023, and she later said that she was safe and asked people not to turn her personal circumstances into a communal controversy.
