Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh: A woman in Bareilly has approached the police alleging that a neighbour subjected her to physical abuse, pressured her to follow Islamic religious practices and later threatened to throw acid on her face.
According to the complaint as described in the allegations circulating about the case, the woman, identified as Mahima Gupta, had become acquainted with her neighbour Farha Khan. Mahima alleges that Farha later took her to a nearby mosque and forced her to recite the Kalma. She further alleges that she was subsequently pressured to adopt Islamic practices against her wishes.
The allegations also include claims of physical violence. Mahima reportedly told police that she was repeatedly confined inside the accused woman's home and assaulted, with loudspeakers allegedly being played at high volume during some of these incidents.
Woman Says She Is Receiving Threats
After filing a complaint, Mahima has reportedly alleged that the situation did not stop. She claims that Farha has continued to abuse her verbally and has threatened to throw acid on her face.
Because an acid attack can cause permanent and life-changing injuries, the reported threat is a matter that warrants immediate attention from law-enforcement authorities. The woman has therefore sought police protection and action against the person she has accused.
Police Investigation Will Establish the Facts
The allegations of forced religious activity, confinement, assault and threats are serious. Police will need to examine the complaint, statements from the people involved, any available CCTV footage, call or message records and other evidence before determining what offences, if any, have been committed.
A complaint or FIR does not by itself establish guilt, and the allegations will have to be tested through the investigation and the judicial process.
The case has also generated strong reactions online, with some posts framing it in communal terms. However, the alleged actions of an individual should not be treated as evidence about an entire religious community. The focus of the investigation should remain on the specific allegations made by the complainant and the evidence available to support or contradict them.
Protection and Swift Action Sought
The immediate concern is the woman's safety, particularly in view of the reported acid-attack threat. If authorities establish that credible threats were made, appropriate preventive and legal measures should be considered to protect the complainant.
Mahima's allegations now await verification through the police investigation. Any person found responsible for assault, unlawful confinement, intimidation or other offences should face action in accordance with the law.
The priority should be clear: protect the complainant, investigate every allegation fairly and ensure that the truth is established through evidence and due process.
