Women and girls should never be treated as lesser or denied their basic rights in the name of religion, culture or tradition. Across the world, women continue to face discrimination, abuse, coercion and restrictions, and these issues deserve to be addressed wherever they occur.
Criticism of religious beliefs, institutions or practices is part of public debate, but it is important to distinguish between specific practices or interpretations that may harm women and the millions of people who follow a particular faith. No entire religious community should be blamed for the actions of individuals or for abuses committed in its name.
Every woman and every girl deserves the right to live with freedom, dignity, safety and equal protection under the law. No belief system or cultural tradition should be used to justify violence, abuse, forced marriage, coercion or the denial of fundamental human rights.
Standing up for vulnerable people means defending their freedom and dignity regardless of their religion, ethnicity or background.
Stand for truth. Stand for the innocent. Stand for the rights and dignity of women and girls.
