A routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a terrifying mid-air emergency after an alleged confrontation broke out inside the cockpit. Indian Captain Smit Machchhar was reportedly stabbed by his co-pilot while operating Flydubai Flight FZ1073.
Despite suffering serious injuries, Machchhar played a crucial role in helping prevent the aircraft from going down. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was carrying 174 passengers, and the aircraft suddenly lost more than 14,000 feet in roughly 30 seconds during the struggle.
What Happened Inside the Cockpit?
The flight was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30, 2026, when the emergency began as the aircraft approached the region.
According to reports, the co-pilot, identified by Israeli officials as an Omani national, allegedly attacked Captain Machchhar with a knife. The aircraft then entered a steep descent, triggering emergency alerts. The exact motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
The claim circulating online that the co-pilot was a Muslim and shouted “Allah hu Akbar” during the incident has not been established in the reliable reports reviewed for this article, so it should not be presented as a confirmed fact.
Machchhar Helped Open the Cockpit Door
Even after being seriously injured, Machchhar reportedly managed to help open the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then rushed toward the cockpit and helped overpower the attacker.
There were also two off-duty Flydubai pilots travelling as passengers who were able to take control of the aircraft after the confrontation. They safely diverted the plane to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where the aircraft made an emergency landing.
Passengers and Crew Helped Save the Flight
The incident was not handled by Machchhar alone. Passengers and crew members intervened during the struggle, while the two off-duty pilots helped operate the aircraft.
Reports also say that a medical professional among those on board provided assistance to the injured captain. Machchhar was taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia, underwent surgery and was later reported to be in stable condition.
The passengers were eventually able to continue their journey after the emergency landing. Reports have credited the captain, passengers, crew and the additional pilots with helping prevent a much more serious outcome.
Captain Smit Machchhar's Courage
Captain Machchhar, an Indian national from Mumbai, has more than 13 years of commercial flying experience. He previously worked with SpiceJet before joining Flydubai in 2022.
His actions during the emergency have received widespread praise. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly praised his bravery following the incident.
The investigation into the cockpit attack and the co-pilot's motive is continuing. Until authorities complete that investigation, details surrounding the attack should be treated as reported allegations rather than established conclusions.
