A woman in Sonipat, Haryana, has approached the police alleging that a man she met through Instagram concealed his real identity before marrying her.
According to the complaint, the woman said she first became acquainted with a person who identified himself as Johnny on Instagram. She later married him, believing that the identity and details he had shared with her were genuine.
The woman alleges that she discovered about six months after the marriage that his actual name was Javed Khan after coming across his Aadhaar card.
She has further alleged that Javed was already married and had three children. Following the discovery, she approached the police and filed a complaint seeking action.
Police are reportedly investigating the allegations and verifying the circumstances surrounding the marriage, the man's identity, his previous marital status and the claims made by the woman.
Is This "Love Jihad"?
The allegation has prompted questions on social media about whether the case could amount to what is commonly described as "love jihad." However, that conclusion cannot be established simply from the allegations currently available.
At this stage, the important questions for investigators are whether the man deliberately concealed his identity, whether he was legally married at the time of the second marriage, what information was exchanged before the marriage, and whether any deception or fraud can be proved.
The woman's allegation should also be distinguished from an established finding of guilt. Police investigation and, if necessary, court proceedings will determine what actually happened.
The question of how the woman's husband was identified as "Johnny" for several months and how she later discovered his Aadhaar details is also something investigators may examine as part of the case. The fact that she did not know his alleged identity for six months does not by itself prove that her complaint is false.
