A major development involving notorious gangster Mohammad Furqan, who had been accused by police of involvement in serious criminal cases including murder, extortion and robbery, has once again brought the troubled history of Kairana and western Uttar Pradesh into focus.
Furqan was associated with the Mukim Kala gang and was described by police as one of the gang's shooters. Authorities had linked him to several cases involving alleged extortion demands and attacks on traders in and around Kairana. In 2017, police said he was carrying a reward of ₹50,000 and was wanted in multiple criminal cases.
According to police accounts reported at the time, Furqan had allegedly demanded money from local traders and was accused of involvement in violent crimes. His name became particularly prominent during the controversy surrounding the reported migration of some families from Kairana, where concerns over crime and extortion had become a major public issue.
The police action against Furqan became one of the notable developments in the crackdown on the Mukim Kala gang. Reports from 2017 said Furqan was first injured and arrested after an encounter near the Kairana-Kandhla area. Later that year, police records cited by The Indian Express reported that a 36-year-old man identified as Furqan, wanted in 38 cases, was killed in an encounter in Muzaffarnagar on September 22, 2017.
The case has remained closely associated with the wider debate over law and order in Kairana. For local traders who had earlier spoken publicly about extortion threats and fear of criminal gangs, the police crackdown was seen as an important step toward restoring confidence.
The episode also became politically significant during the period when the alleged migration from Kairana was being widely debated. Different political groups offered different explanations for why families had left the town, making the issue a major subject of discussion across Uttar Pradesh.
For residents and traders, however, the central concern was much simpler: security and the ability to run their businesses without fear.
The crackdown on gang members brought a sense of relief to many people who had experienced the impact of organised crime in the region.
